Calibrating a drifting MX3 Air Mouse

The MX3 Air mouse is a inexpensive 3-in-one (~10€) 2.4Ghz remote, keyboard and wireless mouse.

Its weakest point is the documentation and many users ignore that a calibration procedure exists to cure SDPS (Self-Drifting Pointer Syndrome)!

Very popular with the MX3 Android Smart TV Box, but also great with PC, PS4 and any Android device, the MX3 Air mouse is sold now under all kinds of "brands" (Rii, W-Shark, Moxmay,...), and with variants improved with a microphone or back-lit keys.

All variants have in common the double-sided keyboard/IR-learning remote design and a gyroscope that allows to point and click at the TV like a Wiimote.

Another think they share is the poor documentation!

While looking like a good setup guide, the copy below lacks some important troubleshooting information that could have saved so many users from a very frustrating experience.

1. A very common issue reported is the air mouse pointer drifting away by itself on screen. This is just due to a badly calibrated gyroscope...and apparently, none of "brand" selling this remote thought useful to document the simple calibration method available.
This is by far the most important omission which lead many users to think they had a faulty device.

Solution:
Wake up the remote (press any button)
Place the remote keyboard down  on a flat surface
Keep HOME + OK buttons pressed (as shown in the picture above) until the top LED starts blinking. When it turns off, the calibration is complete.
Try the mouse cursor again: it should now stay still.

2. Another undocumented tip: the hibernation  mode can be disabled if you find it annoying by pressing the "Cursor Lock" button for 3 seconds.

3. Finally, the instructions could also have included a note like this one: It is normal to not see any cursor on screen even if the pairing was successful. You need to press the Cursor Lock button first.

Hi, is there an option use both sides at the same time not only 1 with the orientation? its annoying to have the remote orientated up right to use the panel

Thanks so much, I did. Work perfect

Just bought this but don't know how to pair with PS4

Maybe it's just a matter of pressing the cursor lock described above? The fact that the cursor is not enabled upon pairing mislead me in the beginning, thinking it was not paired.
If the LED on the remote stops blinking fast, it should be paired, and then is should work as well with PS4 than with any other computer.

Anyone know if there is a factory reset combination to restore the remote without any preprogrammed IR buttons?

Bubbah said...

I read somewhere that it is done by holding "TV" button and "DEL" fro a few second until the LED blinks. I didn't try it. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Bubbah, worked like a charm!

Cursor comes on when pressing any button instead of when you want to use it by pressing cursor button, any one got a fix

Try this: wake up the remote and press the "Cursor lock" for about 3 seconds.

My remote is not working. Its red light is blinking every time I press any key, and the only way of making it stop is pressing the on/off button. Any ideas? Thank you!

One of mines has developed a similar problem over time with the red LED constantly on. The other one (a more recent model with backlit keys) is still fine.
I would recommend to consider a the newer TZ-P3 reviewed here. i got 2 of them 3 months ago, and so far, no issue at all, usb-rechargeable, good battery life and better keyboard, all in a smaller remote.

Thanks for the tips, my air mouse is with the cursor of the direct pointer going up alone, already tried the hint of pressing Home + ok keys, together, but the light is on, does not blink, what should I do to try to solve this problem?

Thank you so much for the calibration help! My remote has had the drift issue since I bought it 2 years ago. If I forget the cursor on, the thing dies in only a few days. Somehow it started working right about 6 months ago, but when I replaced the batteries, it began drifting upwards all over again. Your guide saved me.

BTW, a tip to everyone who bought the backlit remote: the top set of keys for RW/FF and skip back/forward are wired in reverse. Skip back will RW, skip forward will FF, and vice-versa.

Now if I could only get the thing to stop sending double key presses at random times. For example, if I tried to write "apple" 4 times, I may get "applle, aapple, apple, and applee."

The cursor keeps moving by itself from the bottom to the top of the screen.

My remote looks exactly as the mx3 but there is no model number or name on the box or the remote and all the ir learning is not working

Unknown said...

There is a solution to fix this:
1. Unplug the USB off the box (Box's always on)
2. Reinstall batteries to the Remote Air Mouse
3. While the red light blinking, plug in the USB, if the red light stop blinking, you will see the mouse moving and it should work normally. (Keep the Remote Air Moose close to the box)
4. Press mouse button to return Remote mode.

My remote is not working. When I press any of the buttons, the light blink and nothing works. Anyone knows how to resolve this problem?
